How Paying a Financial Coach is like Paying Yourself

Last year, I did a radical thing:  I stopped believing I had to do everything on my own.

I decided to pay for coaching, and it has been an absolute game-changer.  My life has rocketed forward in ways I could only imagine before.  I’m certain I would not be sitting here today writing this blog post if it were not for my coaches.

I’d probably still be in my pajamas, feeling sorry for myself.

Coaching is not just for ordinary people like me.  Oprah Winfrey and Tony Robbins each have multiple coaches.

So . . . coaching must be some kind of magical secret sauce for success.  ‘Cause those people are big-time successful.

But how is coaching so powerfully transformational?  And how can a financial coach help you have so much success with money that it’s like you’re getting another paycheck?  I’ve come up with 4 main reasons:

Perspective

Coaches are not IN the forest.  So they can SEE the forest.  We’re not in the middle of your life with all its struggles and worries, so we can see the big picture and where you’re getting hung up.  We can see the path to the life you really want, when you lose your way.  We can show you how to get back on the trail.

When I coached my very first client, I found an extra $300-500 in her monthly budget within the first few minutes, even though she didn’t have a very big income.  I could SEE that extra money because I wasn’t in the thick of her own personal forest.  And now she has a path forward which will take her to the life she is dreaming of.

Safety

Has fear ever kept you from succeeding?  I know I needed a lot of hand-holding from my coaches to get this business successfully off the ground.  Two years ago, I had a business that failed, largely because of fears that I didn’t overcome.  That fear cost me thousands of dollars in lost revenue that I could have avoided if I’d had a coach.

Coaches create a safe place for you to face your fears.  There’s a lot of angst around money – it’s all tied up around survival and complex emotions, and for most people, even some trauma.  I get that it’s scary.  But how much further could you go with your money if you could soothe your fears in a safe space?  Would you spend less impulsively?  Get paid what you’re worth?  Save and invest for the future?  How much is fear costing you?

When your nervous system feels safe, you create a calm environment from which new ideas and inspiration can emerge.  From that peaceful place, you make room for magical things to unfold, things that will completely blow your mind.

Time

I eventually figured out how to be good at money, but it has taken me a LONG time.  If I’d had a financial coach helping me starting in my 20’s, I could easily have created a net worth 15X greater than what it is now.  Not understanding or taking empowered action when I was in my 20’s, 30’s and 40’s will easily cost me over a million dollars in my lifetime.  I can’t get that time or money back, but I can help others do better with their time and money.

When you hire a coach or a financial coach, you have access to all the wisdom that coach has ever gained from the school of hard knocks.  And it comes at a nominal cost.

Meaning

I sometimes wonder if people worry that when they hire me, I’m going to make them give up their caramel macchiato or whatever.  (Insert your favorite guilty pleasure here).  What I’m actually interested in is helping you align your spending with your values.  So if cozying up to a caramel macchiato every morning is meaningful to you, then I’m going to encourage you to keep doing it.

There have been several times in the last few months that my budget felt a little pinched.  My first thought is usually, “I should cut out my music lessons, since they’re not a necessity.”  But my second thought is always, “Hell no!  I’m not cutting that out!  That brings me so much joy!  I’ll find another way.”

Part of what a financial coach helps you do is understand how you can allocate your money in a more meaningful way.  How can you spend money in a way that makes your heart sing?  What dream do you have that feels out of reach?  With a financial coach, you get there sooner because they help you see how you’re spending money in a way that isn’t meaningful.

Hiring a financial coach can feel like a big expense at first, but any financial coach worth his or her salt will help you multiply your money.  They do that by seeing the big picture and showing you how to spend in a way that is more meaningful; they can ease your fears so that you’re empowered to welcome in fresh ideas and approaches; and they take away the steep learning curve so that you can get good at money fast – because they’ve already done the stupid stuff.
